Creative Learning Projects with Orchestras
A collaborative, creative project for primary classes using music, movement and film making, developed as part of the SCO Wester Hailes Residency.
During a series of workshops, each class invented their own narrative and created a music and movement piece bringing together ideas from the whole group. Every child was involved in the piece, either as a musician or as part of the choreographed movement. In 2019 six classes from Clovenstone, Canal View and Sighthill Primary Schools made short films of their work.
Soundmoves Music Movies were created by P4 & P5 pupils from Clovenstone, Canal View and Sighthill Primary Schools between November 2018 and June 2019 with Matilda Brown (Composer), Ana Almeida (Music & Movement Specialist), Sandy Butler (Videographer), Aisling O'Dea (Violin), Joanna Duncan (Violin), Donald Gillan (Cello), Niamh Molloy (Cello), Harriet Davidson (Cello), William Stafford (Clarinet), and Phil Hague (Percussion). Watch all of them below:
Here I talk more in depth about my role in the project and my Map Method for delivering the project.

Rattray SCO Concert at Perth Concert Halls
Welcome
Brian was born in Argentina. Having not become a farmer in the vast flatness of the South American prairie, Brian opted for a very different life somewhat further north as a viola player. He enjoys a varied life as a member of the SCO, Mr McFall’s Chamber and the Tagore String Trio. He is a committed teacher and is enthusiastic about music of all styles. He also enjoys composition and arranging.
Since October 2015, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra has been in residence at Rattray Primary School, visiting throughout each school term to work with pupils, teachers and families. Composer Matilda Brown and SCO musicians have led regular class workshops and assemblies for the whole school. Our ‘Dot & Lines’ team brought music, movement and art workshops to the nursery, and families and teachers have come along to after-school workshops to take part in musical activities. At events for the wider community we have seen many of you at Big Ears, Little Ears and Stan and Mabel SCO Family Concerts in Blairgowrie and Perth.
We have had a wonderful time working with Rattray pupils and I am delighted to welcome you to celebrate their work with us today. We are very excited to be here at Perth Concert Hall as guests of the Horsecross Youth Arts Festival, and would like to say a huge thank you to our partners at Horsecross for their generous support. At this morning’s concert, P2, P5 and P7 pupils and SCO musicians are going to perform music that they have created together this year. On behalf of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Rattray Primary School, I invite you to sit back and enjoy the show!
